Sudoku Rules & Basics – A Beginner’s Guide

Welcome to Sudoku!

Sudoku is a fun and brain-boosting logic puzzle that challenges you to fill a grid with numbers while following a few simple rules. Whether you're a complete beginner or just need a refresher, this guide will help you master the basics in no time!

The Goal of Sudoku

The classic Sudoku grid consists of 9 rows, 9 columns, and 9 smaller 3x3 grids. The objective is simple:

  • Fill the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1-9 without repeating any number.

Starting the Puzzle

Each Sudoku puzzle starts with some numbers already placed in the grid. Your job is to strategically fill in the missing numbers while following the rules below.

The Three Golden Rules of Sudoku

  • Each Row Must Contain the Numbers 1-9

Every row across the grid must include each number from 1 to 9 exactly once. No duplicates allowed!

  • Each Column Must Contain the Numbers 1-9

Just like rows, every vertical column must also include the numbers 1 to 9 without repetition.

  • Each 3x3 Grid Must Contain the Numbers 1-9

The grid is divided into nine smaller 3x3 sections, and each of these must also contain the numbers 1-9 exactly once.

Solving Sudoku – Tips for Beginners

  • Look for Easy Numbers First – Find rows, columns, or 3x3 grids that are missing just one or two numbers and start filling them in.
  • Scan the Grid for Clues – If a number already appears in a row, column, or 3x3 box, it can’t go there again!
  • Use the Process of Elimination – When unsure where a number goes, eliminate possibilities by checking where it cannot be placed.
  • Take Your Time – Sudoku is all about logic, not guessing! Think through your moves and enjoy the challenge.
